Why does oxygen levels reach such high levels in the day and drop so low at night? Do some kind of aqua plants produce oxygen with sunlight or what?

I have been thinking about your split pond system. One of the major setbacks is the requirements for the power backup which is costly. Could you not use a conventional pump to do the moving and oxygenation of the water? If the answer is yes then build a dam/reservoir that holds enough water to substitute for the pump when the power is down, and use the natural out flow of the dam/reservoir to drive the moving and oxygenation of the raceway water. When the power goes down the dam/reservoir can continue to drive the moving and oxygenation of the raceway water.
