Hawaii Agriculture Conference to Include Student Programs

MORE THAN 500 PARTICIPANTS ARE EXPECTED TO GATHER TO TALK AND LEARN ABOUT AGRICULTURE IN HAWAII. NEXT WEEK…THE HAWAI’I AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE WILL BE HELD… AND IT’S NOT JUST THE ADULTS WHO ARE ATTENDING…BUT THE NEXT GENERATION IS ALSO INVOLVED. JOINING US WITH MORE ARE DANA SATO, DIRECTOR OF ASSET MANAGEMENT AT KAMEHAMEHA SCHOOLS AND MARIAH RAMO, FRESHMAN AT WAIPAHU HIGH SCHOOL. Q-THIS YEAR’S HAWAII AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE THEME IS AGDAPTATION: HAWAII’S GROWING OPPORTUNITY. HOW DOES A STUDENT PROGRAM ALIGN WITH THIS YEAR’S OVERALL CONFERENCE VISION? A- OUR YOUTH HAVE THE POTENTIAL OF BEING A VERY POWERFUL GROUP OF CHANGE ADVOCATES AND WE HAVE YET TO TRULY TAP INTO THEM. LOOK AT THE STIR THAT 16- YEAR-OLD GRETA THUNBERG IS CAUSING REGARDING CLIMATE CHANGE. SHE BY IT AND IS ADVOCATING A POSITION. OUR YOUTH PROGRAM IS INTENDED TO DO SOMETHING OF THE SAME: TO TEACH THEM ABOUT AGRICULTURE AND FOOD SYSTEMS. FOR THE FUTURE. TO MOVE THEM TO ADVOCATE FOR CHANGE AT HOME AND AT SCHOOL. “SUCCESSFUL AGDAPTATION MEANS THAT HAWAI?I AGRICULTURE DOESN’T JUST SURVIVE, IT THRIVES!” AND DO ALL THAT THEY CAN TO MAKE SURE THAT HAWAI?I’S AGRICULTURAL THRIVES. THEY DON’T NEED TO WAIT UNTIL THEIR “ADULTS” TO CAUSE A STIR IN AG. . Q-MARIAH, AS ONE OF THE STUDENT PRESENTERS AT THE CONFERENCE, WHAT WILL YOU BE SPEAKING ABOUT AND WHAT HAVE YOU BEEN WORKING ON IN OPPORTUNITY? A-I’LL BE SHARING ABOUT A PROTOTYPE HYDROPONIC LETTUCE WALL THAT I BUILT LAST YEAR. IT HOLDS OVER 500 HEADS OF LETTUCE WITHIN 24 SQUARE FEET. BECAUSE OF THIS PROJECT, MY PARTNER AND I WERE NAMED NATIONAL FINALISTS FOR THE NATIONAL AGRISCIENCE FAIR. I WAS ALSO FORTUNATE ENOUGH TO SECURE SYSTEM IN MY OLD HOME TOWN OF BACARRA, PHILIPPINES WHERE I PRESENTED ON AG-TECH. WORKING ON THE WALL I REALIZED HOW IMPORTANT IT IS TO UTILIZE AG-TECH FOR THE FUTURE OF AGRICULTURE AND RIGHT NOW I’M IN THE PROCESS OF CREATING A PUBLIC CHARITY CALLED AG INNOVATORS OF TOMORROW. I ALSO HOPE TO CONTINUE BRINGING AG-TECH EDUCATION TO THE PHILIPPINES. 3. Q-HOW DOES THE CONFERENCE HELP PROGRESS HAWAII’S AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY? A-SINCE 2002, THE AGRICULTURE CONFERENCE HAVE PUSHED, EXPANDED AND CHALLENGED PRIVATE AND PUBLIC SECTOR DECISION-MAKERS TO SHARE A VIBRANT AGRICULTURE INDUSTRY IN HAWAII. THE SESSIONS AND CONTENT SHARED AT THE CONFERENCE HELPS REALIZE A MORE COLLECTIVE VISION AMONG STAKEHOLDERS TO FURTHER AGRICULTURE’S VIABILITY IN HAWAII. AND BY FOLDING IN YOUTH LEADERS AND STUDENTS, THE CONFERENCE IS CONSTANTLY EVOLVING THE SECTOR, WHICH IS NECESSARY TO SUSTAIN THE SECTOR.
