Loro Parque: American HUMANE CONSERVATION Certification 👍 | zoos.media

Hello, today we visit Loro Parque. The American Humane Association is what I term the good guys and I didn’t know the history of this organization at all as I worked with animals for 45 years but at one point we were talking about how bad that the “Blackfish” movie number one didn’t tell the proper story – it wasn’t true. But the media and the public started to believe it and I was talking to some individuals: “How can we win back the trust from the people that are believing this?” So, we talked about the whole idea of working with American Humane and I said: “Okay.” Well, American Humane goes back 142 years they started in the very beginning taking care of young children and young cats and things like that. Then in World War I, they actually prepare war horses with veterinarians in Europe and from that they also, then in the 1930s, people were filming a movie in Hollywood and somebody ran a horse over a cliff for a movie shot. Well, of course, the horse didn’t make it and it was kind of an outrage and everybody got upset. American Humane stepped in and they have a program called “No animals were harmed on the set”. So, anytime an animal is used in a movie or any type of a media event, they’re there to watch the animals to make sure they’re being taken care of properly. They also have a program called Humane Heartland where they monitor the wellness of animals that eventually become our food but it basically gives all those animals a very nice life of taking care of them properly. They also do a lot of dog rescues in terms of into clinics or shelters and they bring dogs out to train them to be service animals for the military. So, a lot of the military now, that have PTSD and they come home from terrible experiences, committed suicide but if they have a trained service dog with him on a leash – you know: a buddy – the suicide rate has dropped to zero. So, it’s really phenomenal to have that human animal bond and it’s very important they do that. One of the other major programs, of course, is the rescue programs, when there’s a natural disaster. We have a team on the ground right now in the Bahamas rescuing dogs and cats and birds and pigs and everything else like rabbits. So, not only the people being rescued, but also the animals and hopefully being reunited to their owners which is important. This program, American Humane’s Humane Conservation, started basically three years ago and that’s when I talked to Dr. Robin Ganzert about the whole idea of it. The public is losing trust with good zoos and good aquariums because of the bad publicity and the activists, the extremists, will continue to tell lies ’cause the don’t care. So, we started: we got scientists together, veterinarians, and curators, and created a an auditing tool. So, with this auditing tool, you can take third-party experts, people that used to take care of animals all over their life, and you put them into a facility like Loro Parque and these spend days watching the animals in the morning, watching them in the afternoon, watching them when the public is here, watching them when they interact with their trainers or the keeper. So, we watch the animals to find out how their body looks how, they act with each other, how they act, how they behave – so, it really is a full wellness check like a human being would check into a clinic to make sure all of your your blood work is normal, your body weight is normal, you act normal. So, this is really an animal welfare check to be able to make sure the animals are really taking care of well. Now, what we can do is, we can talk to the public about a place like Loro Parque or the Fort Woth Zoo or the Shedd Aquarium or the Georgia Aquarium and just tell the public: “These are good places. They take very good care of their animals and you have to believe us because we’re the experts.” So, third-party independent certification goes hand in hand with accreditation and accreditation from the different organizations like EAZA or AZA are important, very important, but that’s peer review which is very important but third-party independent experts make all the difference in the world where you can talk to the staff and learn about the animals and talk about ways to enrich their lives more and talk about ways to look at what are the better ways that they could take care of them in the future. So, it’s a good interchange, it’s a great way for certification to work and we don’t turn down anyone who says: “I want to do better.” It’s is a very complex issue but we’ve broken it down scientifically and, of course, objectively with experts so that you can just go in and use that auditing tool in a scientific manner and it’s been days watching the animals and then make the decision: This is a place. So, it’s so important now, I think, for the future for people to say they’re certified and are accredited and they understand what the animals need. That’s what we do and it’s a great organization and now we’re truly global. We’ve done certifications in Europe and I just got back from the Asian area. So, we’re doing this everywhere where people want to have that certification. Write your questions in the comments and don’t forget to give this video a thumb up.
